Materials List

Silverpoint is a delicate, historical drawing medium known for its luminescent mark-making capabilities. Silverpoint artists use a tool made of solid silver, which is used to build a series of marks on a specially prepared surface. First developed in the Renaissance, silverpoint is an important traditional first step in making egg tempera, casein, or oil paintings. It is also a stunning drawing medium on its own. While silverpoint is experiencing something of a resurgence in contemporary art, it is still a rare medium that can be difficult to find information on for those looking to learn about the craft. In this two-hour workshop, students will gain all the tools they need to understand the basics of this unique medium. Participants will learn a brief history of silverpoint, craft their own silverpoint drawing stylus, and experiment with a variety of drawing techniques on different silverpoint-friendly substrates. Participants will walk away with all the tools they need to continue their exploration of silverpoint, as well as a document full of resources, reading, and technical information about the medium for further learning.

NOTE: In accordance with San Francisco guidelines, all participants and faculty will be required to wear masks that fully cover their nose and mouth for in-person, indoor class time.
